LESSONS IN CHEMISTRY EN EL CLUB DE LECTURA DE INGLÉS

 

Aun pareciendo por el Título que la novela trata de un tema científico o académico, la química no es más que un nexo para tratar la vida de una mujer excepcional y valiente durante los años 60 en California. La protagonista Elizabeth Zott, madre monoparental, se enfrenta a una sociedad intransigente y a las vicisitudes del destino. Vicisitudes que en muchos momentos son verdaderamente trágicas, pero de las que Elizabeth sabe salir con resiliencia y el apoyo de personas competentes. A través de la historia de la protagonista se hace una radiografía de la sociedad americana de la época y se manifiesta la poca relevancia que se dejó a las mujeres en los ámbitos de la cultura, la ciencia o el deporte. Hay que destacar el protagonismo del perro Six-Thirty o de Mad, hija de Elizabeth, que dan la nota de ternura y a veces de humor y revierten situaciones trágicas en escenas tiernas y conmovedoras.

Todos los asistentes a la sesión presencial del club han coincidido en que se trata de una novela muy entretenida, recomendable y de lectura amena. En la sesión se comenta la difícil coyuntura de la mujer en la sociedad de mediados del siglo XX, y se reflexiona sobre la situación de la mujer en la actualidad.

Although the title might suggest that the novel deals with a scientific or academic subject, chemistry is nothing more than a link to explore the life of an exceptional and courageous woman during the 1960s in California. The protagonist, Elizabeth Zott, a single mother, faces a rigid society and the vicissitudes of fate. These vicissitudes are truly tragicat times at times, but Elizabeth knows how to navigate them with resilience and the support of competent people. Through the protagonist's story, a portrait of American society of the time is drawn, highlighting the little importance given to women in the fields of culture, science, or sports. The prominence of the dog Six-Thirty and Mad, Elizabeth's daughter, should be noted, as they bring moments of tenderness and sometimes humor, turning tragic situations into touching and heartwarming scenes. All the attendees to the club's session agreed that it is a very entertaining, recommendable novel and an easy read. During the session, the difficult situation of women in mid-20th century society was discussed, and reflections were made on the situation of women today.
